One of the first pieces of BDSM-related erotica that almost set my hair on fire was the "Story of O" by Pauline Réage. Reading this at the age of eighteen confirmed in me the love I had for this very unique world.
The scene that really had me sizzling was when O was punished by Anne-Marie. O was taken and secured on a raised platform with her legs raised and spread wide between two columns. She was then viciously whipped on the inside of her thighs by Collette.
It wasn't just the manner in which she was bound, or even the cruel punishment itself. For me it was the manner in which Anne-Marie relayed her instructions to Collette, and how she maintained complete domination over her victim. The literary description is superb.... "Just a second longer," she said, "and it will be over. Only five more minutes. She can scream for five minutes. It's twenty-five past, Colette. Stop when it's half past, when I tell you to."
The "Story of O" is a must-read for all who are interested in BDSM. Few books, if any, have managed to capture the essence of sado-masochism as well.

oddly Max, perhaps becuase I'm coming from the other side of the coin, I find the Story of O one of the most poignant, sad and tragic stories I've read in the genre. I too read it years ago and more recently revisited it. It just reconfirmed that I don't care for it. I actually do NOT find it very sensual (and didn't back then - much preferred Henry Miller and some of the Victorian authors).
Ultimately, O - who proves herself a wonderful submissive, is betrayed and reviled and dies - that just doesn't cut it for me!
